iTero Scanner Is The Industry Standard For Intraoral Scanning

Digital scanning for braces and Invisalign therapy is a significant advancement in orthodontic technology. It is an integral element of what we perform at WoodShore Family Dentistry. We currently use one of the state-of-the-art orthodontic scanning tools, i.e., iTero digital scanning technology. So, what does digital scanning mean for you as a patient when it comes to your dental health? Continue reading to find out.

How Do iTero Intraoral Scanners Work?

First, some history. iTero scanners are a brand of intraoral scanners. Intra-oral scanners have been around since the late 1980s. In fact, it was in 1985 when the first true oral scanner was invented. The scanners of the late 1980s, on the other hand, are a far cry from the sophisticated models we use today: technology has advanced significantly since then. On the technical front, iTero intraoral scanners were a game-changer when they entered the market in 2007

To be clear, in our practice, we use an iTero Scanner to make precise, computerized, 3-D maps of your gums and teeth, which we can then use to improve your overall dental health through:

  • Orthodontics, preferably utilizing Invisalign braces
  • Single piece replacement
  • Small Cosmetic adjustments

According to a recent analysis of over 170,000 cases, iTero Scanners used in Invisalign orthodontics treatments minimize alignment rejection tenfold and fit difficulties sevenfold. Accuracy is synonymous with iTero scanners.

As a result of a scanning procedure, a patient can see his/her mouth digitally reproduced on a computer screen, which is nice. Still, most importantly, a dentist can better know your overall dental health through this 3-D image.

What Was It Like Before Digital Scanning Technology?

Traditional braces' therapy entailed taking a series of uncomfortable gloppy, goopy impressions of your gums and teeth. Orthodontists would load metal or plastic trays with sticky, gooey substance, you'd open your mouth wide, and the doctor would stretch it back.

You'd have cold, wet goo all over your mouth and maybe drip down your chin if the tray was placed less than perfectly. This was a "nightmare" for individuals with a sensitive gag reflex, as it could result in choking and coughing, not to mention anxiety. It was not a fun experience for these people, and it wasn't much better for those who weren't as sensitive. In addition to that, a dentist would frequently have to take multiple distinct impressions! Then, the dentist would proceed to make a one-to-one plaster model of your gums and teeth study their structure and problems. You might have seen some of these blueish plaster molds on movies or TV shows.

For an orthodontist, it is vital to obtain accurate anatomy of the patient's mouth – as precisely as possible – yet with the manual difficulty (and discomfort to the patient) of handling gooey substances, getting it on the first try might prove difficult. Furthermore, you might imagine that most patients' uneasiness and discomfort would escalate with each new impression. Not to mention that if we were unable to get a perfect impression, it could complicate the patient's overall therapy.

What Digital Scanning Means For Patients?

We are delighted that today we can provide patients with a far superior experience to traditional orthodontic impressions! One of the fascinating aspects of modern orthodontic technology is improving our patients' experiences during their treatment. We now have a sleek modern, computerized, digital scanning machine instead of goopy manual impressions.

An assistant does a brief digital scan of your teeth by running a small wand over the surface of your teeth and gums when you come to our office. You may be able to witness the digital model of your teeth is created right before your eyes! It's a quick scan, and the vast majority of patients don't gag. During the scan, the wand is meant to be tiny and feel pleasant in your mouth. Furthermore, our assistants are the best at making our patients' scans quick and easy, as well as providing a positive experience for them.

Aside from our patients' comfort, there are clinical benefits to digital scanning. We can better capture the accuracy and information with a digital scan versus a manual impression to improve treatment. This enables us to design dental treatment with meticulous attention to detail to provide our patients with a healthy mouth.

How Do Patients Benefit from the iTero Intraoral Scanner – Invisalign Integration?

One use case of the iTero Intraoral Scanner is for application in an Invisalign orthodontic treatment. Patients benefit from the iTero-Invisalign integration in two ways:

  1. Simulation of Outcomes

The Invisalign Outcome Simulator is powered entirely by iTero. It not only lets patients see their scans come to life in real-time, but it also replicates, on the screen, the eventual outcomes of orthodontic treatment. That way, you can propose adjustments to your alignment before the orthodontic treatment has started. These anticipated corrections provide you with something to look forward to. The visualization has also proved helpful in assisting patients in planning for future therapies. It is not uncommon for a patient to arrange for additional orthodontic intervention after realizing that scheduled treatments would not provide them with the desired smiles on their own.

  1. Invisalign Progress Evaluation

The Invisalign Progress Assessment is a tool provided by Invisalign that allows us to track your orthodontic treatment's progress. Your scans are compared to your treatment plans by the iTero software. Invisalign braces can then be adapted to the patient if there were a significant variation between the expected and actual results. In addition, the Invisalign Doctor Site (IDS) collects updates on your progress, allowing the firm to optimize your aligners.
